After 9/11, I saw America ready to shift course and begin to prioritize the kinds of people and issues that should be of paramount concern today. We have a deteriorating societal infrastructure that is most alarming and if it is not repaired ASAP, then within our own lifetimes, we might live to experience the final decline phase of contemporary Western civilization. However, the only message delivered by the President following 9/11 was not one of inspiration in terms of who our heroes should be or what we should value; instead he simply exhorted the American public to go out and buy things (like SUV's) in order to stimulate the economy. The net result: we are headed down the same dangerous path, venerating the wrong kinds of heroes and striving for the same frivolous, spiritually destructive goals. In my mind, the Cult of Celebrity, designed primarily to sell products to the masses, is no longer a luxury we can afford today. But don't get me wrong: I certainly am NO Mother Teresa on a holy mission to change the world and convert everybody to my religion; rather my motives are more selfish than that...I simply fear that I still will be alive when the entire society begins to crumble and will suffer personally the most negative consequences....and I simply strive to be a brick in the wall toward making a difference, even if I am fully aware of the tremendous obstacles in doing so." | |
