| About |
In the back corner of an old barn, amidst an array of band posters, empty water bottles, broken drum sticks, old thrown away carpet, a single strand of christmas lights, two lava lamps and the hum of amps turned up to ten, you?ll hear the magical music that flows by the name Yuca.
With the rehearsal door closed and only the faint sound of the kick drum in the air, you?re curiosity leads you to tune your ear and wait silently. If you listen carefully you?ll begin to hear the beautiful, creative passion of Jeremy Friesen on bass building off the foundation that drummer Mike Newman, lays so effortlessly. Your excitement makes the air feel warm as your ear picks up on these graceful yet hard-edged, anthemic textures being played by guitarist James Pendleton. As icing is to cake, so are the emotionally charged melodies and soaring vocals that lead singer Matt Borck lays on top. You don?t want to move and you don?t have to.
The music that Yuca makes is relevant, accessible music for people everywhere. Yuca is very passionate about getting their music heard by as many people as they possibly can, ?that?s why we?re making it? states lead singer Matt Borck, ?our credo is to combine an original sound with honest lyrics - charged with pure emotion?.
Since 2003, when Yuca was started, the bands intense longing for something more set them apart from what a rock band, and rock music, can and cannot do. Having been immersed in music their whole lives, you can hear that the magical music they create comes naturally; it?s in their genetic code.
Back at the door of the old barn, you begin to notice that as every track is being created and played it?s as if these songs know only to spread and consume. Now towering over the music you hear this clawing at the rehearsal space walls as the songs are crying to be let out. The door hinges are bulged as they strain to contain these wildfire songs in waiting. These songs couldn?t wait any longer.
Many rehearsals, group song-writing and long discussions into the night built the foundation for Yuca?s first full production recording.
Yuca chose Larry Anschell of Turtle Recording Studios, White Rock, BC - Canada to Co-Produce and Engineer Yuca?s first CD, ?Things I haven?t said?. Larry is recognized as a leading engineer and producer whose credits include Sarah McLachlan, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Bryan Adams and Nickleback to name just a few.
Larry recently said about Yuca, ?I could rave about Yuca?s intelligent lyrics, their infectious melodies and driving rhythms, but what amazed me most about working with the band was their cohesiveness, confidence and sheer musicianship. In 18 hours, ?Things I Haven?t Said? was recorded mostly live to analog tape without digital editing and was an incredible series of first takes from beginning to end (the equivalent of bowling a 300 or pitching a no-hit game!). Full of the elusive ?IT? factor, Yuca is a world class band and a breath of fresh air in the stale world of cookie cutter corporate modern rock.?
Listen and watch for Yuca to feed your soul.
